Through coloured render
Through coloured render contractors for new-build housing
JMC Drywall Ltd is a render contractor based in Tiptree, rendering new-build homes in Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and East London. We apply through coloured monocouche render and are on the installer registers of K Rend and Saint-Gobain Weber. Render is on five of our current schemes, among them 225 homes at Dovecote Gardens in Spixworth for Orbit Homes.
What the package covers
- Through coloured monocouche render
- K Rend and Saint-Gobain Weber render systems
- Render to blockwork elevations
- Beads, stops and movement joints to the specification
- Mesh reinforcement at openings and changes of substrate
- Sample panels for colour and texture approval
How render goes wrong on a housing scheme
Through coloured render shows every mistake, because the colour is the finish and there is no paint to hide a repair. Stopping part way across an elevation leaves a joint line. Rendering one wall in cold, damp weather and the next in sun can give two shades on one house.
Most of those faults cannot be patched out. The fix is often a whole elevation, with the scaffold back up.
- Joint lines where work stopped mid-elevation
- Shade differences from weather or mixed batches
- Cracks where blockwork meets a lintel with no mesh across it
- Lime bloom from rendering in cold, damp conditions
- Scaffold tie holes patched in a different shade
- Render bridging the damp proof course at the base of the wall
Monocouche and the systems on your specification
Monocouche is a single coat system of through coloured cement render, often applied in two passes by machine or by hand and usually scraped back to an even texture. The colour runs through its full depth, so the elevation needs no painting.
K Rend and Saint-Gobain Weber both make through coloured renders, and both hold JMC Drywall on their installer registers. We apply the system your specification names, with the beads, mesh and details that manufacturer publishes.
Colour, texture and bead layout are for the specification to set. A sample panel agreed on site settles the colour while it is still one panel.
Where render sits in the programme
Render follows the windows, door frames and sills, and goes on before the scaffold is struck and the downpipes are fixed. Roof work above an elevation is best finished first, as runoff from a working roof stains fresh render.
Each elevation should run corner to corner, or bead to bead, in one go. That needs the scaffold clear of the wall and enough labour on site for the whole elevation, which is why we ask for the programme with the tender.
Manufacturers set the weather and temperature limits for application. On a winter programme those limits decide which days render can go on.
What we need to price your render
Send the drawings with the elevations, the specification, inclusions list, scope and programme. The render system, colour and texture, the bead layout and who provides the scaffold are the points that change a render price most.
Your price comes back by the deadline in your tender.

Questions
What buyers ask us
- Which contractors do rendering on new-build housing in Essex?
- JMC Drywall Ltd renders new-build housing from its base in Tiptree, Essex, and works across Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and East London. It is on the installer registers of K Rend and Saint-Gobain Weber. Render is on five of its current schemes, including Castleton Grange in Eye for Persimmon Homes. In Essex it rendered Handley Gardens in Maldon for Taylor Wimpey.
- What is monocouche render?
- Monocouche is a through coloured cement render applied as a single coat system, by machine or by hand, then usually scraped to an even texture. Because the pigment runs through the render, the wall needs no paint. K Rend and Saint-Gobain Weber both make monocouche renders. The manufacturer's data sheet sets the thickness, the backgrounds it suits and the weather it can go on in.
- Can through coloured render be repaired without the repair showing?
- Small repairs can be made, but a patch on through coloured render often shows against the wall around it, as the shade depends on the batch, the weather and how the surface was finished. That is why render gangs work to natural breaks such as corners and beads, and why a sample panel is agreed first. Planning the scaffold ties before rendering saves patching later.
- Have you rendered housing association schemes?
- Yes. Render is among our trades on four current schemes for Orbit Homes. We are on site at Dovecote Gardens in Spixworth, 225 homes, and at Victoria Gardens in Great Plumstead, 272 homes, where the render is through coloured. Brook Gardens in Elmswell, 65 homes, and Homestead Park in Stonham Aspal are both handed over.
- Can render go on during a winter programme?
- Only on days within the conditions the manufacturer allows, which rule out frost and rain on fresh work. On a winter programme some days will be lost to weather, and the sequence of elevations has to allow for that. The programme sent with your tender enquiry shows which elevations fall in the winter months.
